2019 Mac Pro 12-Core versus various older Pro Macs
February 21st, 2020 by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist
We previously compared the 2019 Mac Pro to the 2010 Mac Pro. But how does it stack up against the other Pro Macs including the 16-inch MacBook Pro 8-Core?
19MP 12c = 2019 Mac Pro 12-core 3.3GHz Xeon W-3235 CPU, 96GB of 2933MHz DDR4 ECC memory, AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo GPU (64GB of HBM2 memory)
iMP 8c = 2017 iMac Pro 8-core 3.2GHz Xeon W-2140B CPU, 32GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 ECC memory, AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 GPU (16GB of HBM2 memory)
rMBP 8c = 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro 2.4GHz 8-core i9 9980HK CPU, 32GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M GPU (8G of GDDR6 memory)
cMP 12c = 2010 Mac Pro 12-core 3.33GHz Xeon X5680 CPU, 96GB of 1333MHz DDR3 ECC memory, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT GPU (8GB of GDDR5 memory)
nMP 8c = 2013 Mac Pro 8-core 3.0GHz Xeon E5-1680 CPU, 64GB of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory, AMD FirePro D700 dual GPUs (6GB of GDDR5 memory each)
Cinebench 20 - CPU Render of 3D Sample Scene
For more Mac comparisons see our Cinebench Shootout page. (HIGHER Score = FASTER)
Blender 2.81a - CPU Multi-Core Render
Used the BMW Demo Scene. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)
Logic Pro X - Playback of Multiple Audio Tracks
Using the Evan Benchmark Project, we kept adding tracks until the Mac cried 'uncle.' (HIGHER Number of Tracks = FASTER)
Compressor - Transcode BruceX to HEVC
Using the BruceX 5K project, we used Compressor to transcode it to HEVC 10-bit. (LOWER time in Seconds = FASTER)
HandBrake - Transcode
We transcoded a 1080p ProRes two minute project to HEVC 10-bit.
(LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)
After Effects 2020 - Render Project
Rendered the TESTCOMP benchmark project . (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)
Lightroom Classic - Export Full-Sized JPEGs
We exported 100 Sony 7952x5304 images. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)
WHAT DID WE LEARN?
The 2019 Mac Pro tower beats the older pro Macs in all tests featured above.
The tests on this page are CPU intensive. Maybe a follow-up article can emphasize the same set of Pro Macs running GPU intensive pro apps.
The MacBook Pro does surprisingly well versus the older Mac Pros.
