RX 6900 XT GPU versus Pro Vega II Duo in the 2019 Mac Pro
June 24th, 2021 by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist
How does the Pro Vega II Duo compare to a single RX 6900 XT? And how fast do they run when BOTH are active?
GRAPH LEGEND
6900 XT + Vega II Duo = AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT and Apple Pro Vega II Duo
Pro Vega II Duo = Apple Pro Vega II Duo
RX 6900 XT = AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT
Pro Vega II = Apple Pro Vega II
Testing Platform: 2019 Mac Pro, 3.3GHz 12-Core Xeon W CPU, 96GB RAM, macOS Big Sur 11.5 Beta
Octane X - Metal
Render Benchmark Trench. (LOWER time in Seconds = FASTER)
DaVinci Resolve 17 - Metal
Playback the Candle 1080p project using triple noise reduction. (HIGHER Frames per Second = FASTER)
WHAT DID WE LEARN?
When both the AMD RX 6900 XT and Apple Pro Vega II Duo were active, they produced the fastest times for both Octane X and DaVinci Resolve. But when running separately, the RX 6900 XT ran DaVinci noise reduction fastest while the Vega II Duo ran Octane X render fastest.
NOTE: The AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series requires Big Sur 11.4 or later when running on a Mac.
Since the RX 6000 Series has three Display ports, you will want to use a display that has DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC. We tested using a Dell UP2715K display which has dual DisplayPorts to enable support of 5K.
NOTE: We chose the Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 6900 XT because it was 12.2 inches long. Versions longer than that will not fit in the 2019 Mac Pro.
