Radeon Pro W5700X MPX Module 8K RED Noise Reduction Playback versus other GPUs

May 13th, 2020 by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist

Apple's Radeon Pro W5700X takes on other 2019 Mac Pro compatible GPUs in a playback shootout using R3D projects with Temporal Noise Reduction.

DaVinci Resolve 16.2 - R3D 8K Playback #1
Using an 8K RED Project called "Pollen," we applied "Better, Normal" Temporal Noise Reduction with 25% Luma, 25% Chroma, 50% Motion, 50% Blend. We rendered noise reduction using Metal. (HIGHER Frames per Second = FASTER)

WHAT DID WE LEARN?

At $1000 USD, the Radeon Pro W5700X is not cheap, but neither is the $2800 USD Radeon Pro Vega II. But the cost/performance ratio favors the Pro W5700X in this DaVinci Resolve looping playback test.

However, the third party Radeon RX 5700 XT (@$400 USD) provides an even better cost/performance advantage.

On the other hand, the Apple MPX modules do offer other advantages such as the greater amount of video memory and built-in Thunderbolt 3 functionality (dual channel, four ports).
