(What's Missing from Apple Inc. Products?)

Updated January 5th, 2012 by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist

We keep a running list of what's missing from Apple Inc. products and product line. Here's our latest suggestions...

Missing From the Mac Pro

  • SLI or Crossfire support -- High-end Windows PCs offer the ability to link to graphics cards to form a "dual processor" GPU -- too bad the Mac Pro doesn't support this capability.
  • Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 support -- hopefully it will come on the next Mac Pro model
  • Blu-ray support -- we want a factory "blessed" Blu-ray optical drive with Mac OS X support for Blu-ray authoring, burning, and playback. BTW, last November, MCE announced their Blu-ray Recordable Drive that reportedly burns Blu-ray discs directly from FCP and Compressor -- plus their software is supposed to enable you to play Blu-ray movies on your Mac.

Missing From MacBook Pro

  • A "pumped up" model like the AlienWare M18x Custom Gaming Laptop with options like overclocked 4GHz Core i7 CPU, dual internal SSDs (RAID 0), and dual SLI enabled GeForce GTX 580M GPUs. (Of course, it will be thick, heavy, hot running, and cost $4724.)
  • USB 3.0 support

Missing From MacBook Air

  • A 15.4" model.
  • USB 3.0 support

Missing From iMac

  • Easy access door for drive upgrade
  • USB 3.0 support

Missing From the iPhone

  • Removable battery
  • LTE (4G) wireless broadband support

Missing From OS X

Missing From The Lineup

  • Mac Pro 'Lite' with one optical bay, two user-serviceable drive bays, one or two x16 PCIe slots, and four memory slots for users who want some level of expandability but can't afford a 'full throttle' Mac Pro.
  • Backlit Keyboard for Desktops -- we use Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin Keyboards in our lab. (You have to remap the Option and Command keys but that's the only tweak required. Only $65 on Amazon.)
