Like most of you, we now have our "meat hooks" on the iPhone 4. It's supposed to be faster than the 3GS. But how much faster is it? We used four benchmarking apps to get a snapshot of the performance advantage of the iPhone 4 over the iPhone 3GS (running iOS 4).
PERFORMANCE MATRIX
(* Our network speed testing was done in our lab late yesterday afternoon. Your download/upload speeds will vary depending on many factors. The main takeaway is the huge gain in upload speed from a maximum possible of 384Kbps on the iPhone 3GS to a maximum possible of 5800Kbps on the iPhone 4.)
CONCLUSION
The iPhone 4 provides a significant speed gain over the iPhone 3GS.
BONUS INSIGHTS
We ran two of the benchmarks on the iPad. It ran SunSpider Javascript Benchmark in 10218.4 ms overall (1% faster). Breaking down the 9 elements of the benchmark, the iPad was 32% faster on regexp and 15% faster on math. But the iPhone 4 scored 20% faster on 3D and crypto.
Regarding the 3D Benchmark, the iPad averaged 48.3 fps or 2% faster than the iPhone 4.
We ran SunSpider on the Sprint EVO 4G. The iPhone 4 is 27% faster overall.
