Acard's 4 Channel Ultra ATA-133 Hardware RAID

versus FireWire 800 RAID and Ultra320 SCSI RAID

Originally posted 07/18/03 by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist

This article is primarily designed to introduce the new AEC-6885MS 4-CH High Scalability ATA133 RAID PCI Host Adapter from Acard. Up to now, the ATA Hardware RAID cards were two channel only. And they only supported RAID 0. This new card supports RAID 0, 1, and 0+1... all in hardware. Way kewl.

I decided to test the 6885MS with 4 drives, one on each channel. For comparison purposes, I tested with two AEC-6880M dual channel ATA HW RAID cards, each with two drives. In other words, four channels and four drives. Of course, I had to use a combination of HW RAID 0 and SW RAID 0 to stripe all four drives. I wanted to see if one 4 channel card is faster than two 2 channel cards.

Finally, I included FireWire 800 four drive RAID 0 (both 2 and 4 channels) and Ultra320 SCSI four drive RAID 0 (both 2 and 4 channels). In other words, if cost is no object, what's the fastest 4 drive combination, ATA-133? FireWire 800? or Ultra320 SCSI? And if cost is a factor, what's the best buy?
