Mahalo to Honolulu CompUSA for providing the G4/933 and G4/1000MP test units

Redo. I felt the 11 second test was too short.

New test: Drop the 6 clips from the iMovie Tutorial Media folder into a new project (46 seconds total). Add Video Filter to all 6 clips - Gaussian Blur (2 pixels). Render ALL.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

This test was inspired by a reader who was trying to decide between the G4/933 and G4/1000MP for digital video production. He wanted to know if the 1000MP was worth the added $700. Actually, if the two machines are comparably equipped (512MB RAM, 80MB hard drive, SuperDrive, etc.), the difference is $500. That means the 1000MP costs 20 percent more.

Based on the test above, the 1000MP is 37 percent faster. So I say for Digital Video production, the 1000MP has a better price/performance ratio than the 933.

However, if you can get your hands on a refurbished 800MP for $2299 or a used 533MP for $1699, both have better Digital Video price/performance ratios than either the 1000MP or the 933. Just a thought. (SmallDog.com has refurbished G4/800MP's for $2299)

Any day now I will be posting Photoshop 7.0 (OS X) speed test results on the above four machines using a new action file I call "CRUNCH." You're going to love it.

TEST HARDWARE

Apple Power Mac G4/533MP, G4/800MP, G4/933, and G4/1000MP. All three were running Mac OS 10.1.3.

TEST SOFTWARE
