TEST ONE: transfer the "large" version (13MB) of the "1984 Mac Commercial" QuickTime document from the RAM disk on one machine to the RAM disk on the other. The times for the downloading the same document from a Windows NT Server via cable modem to a 7500/233 was included since it's technically YAEC (Yet Another Ethernet Connection).

TEST TWO: At the suggestion of a reader, I also transferred a 15MB folder filled with 368 small documents to and from the two Power Macs. Here's those results:

TEST SPECS

  • *NOTE: These are early results. Testing is still in progress. Results from AppleShare IP (v 5 and 6 beta), Timbuktu Express Pro, and SpeedShare will soon be added.
  • Testing was done between a Power Mac 8600/300 and G3/300, both with 128MB of RAM
  • System was MacOS 8.1
  • A 30MB RAM disk was used on each system to diminish the impact of disk read/writes focus on network speed.
  • Disk cache set to 96K (Larger sizes slowed the transfer!)
  • Extensions Manager defined "8.1 Base" extensions
  • Virtual memory was turned OFF
  • The 10BaseT testing was done using built-in Ethernet
The 100BaseT testing was done using
    AsanteFAST 10/100 PCI adapters
  • The hub used for 10BaseT testing was an Asante 10T Hub/8
The hub used for 100BaseT testing was Asante Plug-&-Play 100TX Hub/6
  • Asante NetDoubler software was DEMO version 1.5.1D; Version 3.0 of AsanteFAST drivers were used
  • Connectix Speed Doubler software was version 8.1 with "Faster Network Copy Protocol" option ON

A special "mahalo" (Hawaiian "thank you") to MacMouse Club for the use of their 8600/300, G3/300, Asante PCI adapters, Asante Ethernet hubs, and lab space.
