The 16-inch MacBook Pro Gets A New CTO GPU Option, the Pro 5600M. How fast is it?

Without fanfare, Apple added the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU as a Configure-To-Order option to the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Is it significantly faster than the Pro 5500M?

WHAT DID WE LEARN?
The new 16-inch MacBook Pro AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU with 8GB of HBM2 memory is a serious, though pricey ($700 USD), upgrade. The examples above exhibited from 19% to 112% gains over the Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory.
Is it a good investment? Should you be depressed that you are 'stuck' with the Pro 5500M? It depends on what apps you are running. Some apps such as Lightroom (Enhance), Motion (render RAM preview), Final Cut Pro (transcode BruceX), and Compressor (transcode to HEVC) showed little or no gain in our testing.
One source predicted that the Pro 5600M might run some tasks as fast as the desktop Radeon RX 5700 XT. Our next article will demonstrate how an eGPU with the RX 5700 XT compares to the internal Pro 5600M's performance.
