I was impressed
with the Hitachi 7K60 7200rpm notebook drive a few
days ago when I tested
it in two different FireWire 400
enclosures.
I couldn't help but wonder, "How fast would it go
in a FireWire 800 enclosure... if one existed for a
notebook drive?"
Well guess what.
Wiebetech
is going to start shipping their MicroGB800
enclosure
for notebook drives in a few days. They gave me a
sneak peek.
This report has
two parts that answer four questions:
PAGE ONE -- How
much speed does the FireWire 800 notebook enclosure
add to the 7K60's speed compared to a FireWire 400
enclosure? And how do those two compare to putting
the 7K60 drive inside a PowerBook G4/800
Titanium?
PAGE
TWO --
Will 5400rpm and 4200rpm notebook drives go faster
when installed in the Wiebetech MicroGB800? And how
do they all compare to an 3.5 inch drive in a
Firewire 800 case?
ANALYSIS
1. The Wiebetech
FireWire
800 mobile
enclosure
squeezes even more speed out of the Hitachi 7K60
7200rpm notebook drive than the FireWire 400 case.
(The sustained read speed was a puzzle.)
2. The 7K60
really screams inside the TiBook. It equalled the
speed of the FireWire 800 enclosure. It's a must
have upgrade if you can handle the
price.
Not
every PowerBook model will gain as much speed. A
G3/500 Pismo only clocked 25MB/s READ and 29MB/s
WRITE. But that's way faster than the stock
drive.
It would be an
awesome replacement of your internal Aluminum
PowerBook drive. Get the bare 7K60 drive from
either Other
World Computing
or Trans
International.
