CONCLUSIONS

Based on my results, the IBM Deskstar 120GXP performs as fast or faster than any of the other tested Ultra ATA drives when put in a FireWire case kit.

However, the WD1200JB, a "tiger" on an ATA-100 adapter, becomes a "kitten" in a FireWire case. And the 8MB buffer appears to lose its advantage over the "BB" model with 2MB buffer.

However, if you plan to move the drive back and forth between the FireWire case and an internal Ultra ATA interface, the Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB would be the best choice. Why? Check out my test results for that drive on an ATA-100 interface.

How about FireWire RAID?

WHERE TO BUY

Buy.com has the 40GB (sku=10316302), 80GB (sku=10316286), and 120GB (sku=10316285) versions of the IBM 120GXP in stock (search on "120gxp" or specific sku number). Also, check prices and availability at GoogleGear.com (search on "120gxp") and Other World Computing.

GoogleGear has the best price by far on the Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB and WD1000JB special edition drives with 8MB buffers.

Other World Computing, FWDepot, and Granite Digital all have excellent FireWire Case Kits.
